Olympic Foiling

Post by ronnie »

Now that it seems pretty much certain that the 2024 Olympic windsurfing will be foiling/fin based, it could be interesting to keep track of how that changeover happens.

Training for RSX sailors for windfoiling.

Back in 2012, windsurfing had been voted out of the Olympics, and by September 2012 windsurf Gold medallist Dorian Van Rjisselberghe (@ 1 minute in the video) was racing in the Kite Racing World Championship - so these guys can adapt fast!

Tom Squires is all over it.

An explanation of the iFoil Olympic foiling/fin Class. It is also designed to be used with a fin in some conditions and courses, but the design is biased toward foiling performance.

A feeder Series is not established for Olympic foiling, but it is possible that the Bic Techo293 program could be developed to fill that role.
Bic already have the Bic Techno 130 windfoil, which is a bit more of an even compromise between being used with a foil or fin, so it seems that it could be ideal as a progression board.

With an 8m sail and fin.

Today should see the start of the action in the iQFoil European Championship.

This is the first big event Title for the new Olympic Class, and the racing is likely to be intense.
The Formula Foil Racing has had very favourable comments from competitors on how adrenaline filled the Foil racing is, and the IQ Class should be even more exciting.
The plan is to keep a ratio of 4 Course races to 2 Slalom races.
In the Formula Foil, the men's and ladies events were very competitive - except for the winners, who both dominated the event. Equipment differences will have affected that. With the IQ Foil equipment all being equal, the racing should be ultra close.

There are signs that the wind is improving and they might start racing in the iQ Foil European Championship today.

They seem to be lining up the first Slalom heats.

The Event was listed to start on the 21st August, when conditions were good, but they were still finishing the Formula Foil racing, so It seems strange to schedule the iQ Championship and not run it from the start date.

Live with Ben Proffitt.

The 3 Slalom Double winners - so far. It's looking like the wind will be similar in the next 2 days, so we may have more Slalom.

Helene Noesmoen. After dominating the Formula Foil, the new World Champion is dominating again. So much faster, that she's added an uphaul.
She is also so fit, that she won the Engadin Wind Marathon between winning the Formula Foil and starting the iQFoil Championship.
Image

Sebastian Koerdel. Won the first ever iQ Foil heat and has kept on winning.

Matteo Iachino started his winning run with the last Course Race of the Formula Foil Event.
