It’s like he’s had way too much coffee... and he never lets anybody speak when he interviews them?!

Apparently the reason Proffitt doesn’t do the Maui commentary is due to the event being broadcast on American TV; his particular brand of humour is lost on the viewers!

This old chestnut. KK's style is somewhat "marmite" but what you can't fault is his insight into the local conditions having sailed there a gazillion times and his knowledge of the local sailors. I remember John Skye saying on his clinic I attended how difficult he found commentary when he was once stranded alone in the booth so don't knock it until you've tried it.

For good or bad you do feel like you get the 'Maui' experience listening to KK.*

*In my case mostly bad, but listening to him is very entertaining but also reminds me what I hated about Maui.

I agree with this - but at the same time there is no doubt so much more he knows that he doesn't say - BP is very good at filling in the little details from the chat on the beach. Instead KK just chats mindless words. Very frustrating - but better than nothing.

To be fair he has improved each year. Hes managed to reach irritating from his starting point of intolerable  . The US commentators of any sports I have heard are all irritating (e.g. surfing!). I also think Mercedes has had a word with him about slagging off European sailors and locations so hes coming across as less arrogant this year.

Coverage in generally is a lot better too with multiple cameras, drones and replays.

The drone shots of sailors tracking an empty Hawaiian swell then dropping in are windsurfing porn. Really really make me want to sail Ho'okipa again. No chance of said swell lines being empty though :(

Maybe they could overdub a Henry Blofeld style commentary for us Radio 4 listeners :-)
