Neil Pryde masts alternatives?

Post by northy » Wed Sep 04, 2019 3:02 pm

Hi

Are there any alternatives to running Pryde masts (id guess SP90 or TPX 100) in Neil Pryde sails eg Combats?
Anyone got any first hand experience.

Unifiber might suggest Simmer/Goya also Flexy top?

Both those sails worked ok for me on HotRods from HotSails Maui.

This question I see often on NP sails.
In future I will reserve my HotRods for Hot Sails Maui Sails .

I know several sailors who have put constant curve masts in their Pryde sails and find them working better than with the Neil Pryde masts.

I have had some Neil Pryde sails the last years and I have used Maverx masts in them all. They have all worked perfect with those masts.

I think simmer and Goya are similar to North in that they are cc or slightly softer top. I use North/dt masts in simmer sails with no issues. I have a suspicion that most brands have adopted this approach now. GA and Severne moved to cc so Pryde are the only big brand I know still using something specific other than cc.

Every production run of masts will have its own quirks but I think they are all aiming for a consistent cc mast/sail combo and the production approach is pretty mature now. The days of huge variety are hopefully over.

I have a Goya 340 as a spare and it’s almost the same curve as the Pryde masts. I think Maverx make masts with all different curves so try them.

Using MaverX in a range of NP sails older Combats and newer Hellcats for example. SDM for the Hellcat as it didn’t like RDM much. The SDM are 100% race versions and very light, seem pretty tough as well.
Found them to be fine, very good in use, and much better priced than the NP alternates.
