2018 JP 135 Hydrofoil & Slingshot Foil Combo?

Post by Bananos » Tue Apr 23, 2019 11:16 pm

Interested in opinions of this board and foil combo: 2018 JP 135 Hydrofoil & Slingshot Foil

Mostly, does this board work well with Slingshot foils?

I’m 165lbs., summer winds where I live can be 8-12 mph. I’d likely be on a Slingshot 76 and/or 84. (I know that sounds big, but believe me, the winds are light).

I’ve been windsurfing since the ‘80’s, but looking to sail more locally now with a foil.

Thank you for any thoughts feedback. 🤙💥💪

I cant really comment on the JP Hydro, but I have found the Slingshot to be easy to use on a board not designed for foiling (easier than the NP pink one) so I guess it is not enormously sensitive to board. Its good to have space to put your foot over the fin bolts for early take off (and from memory the JP has room for this?). Why not compare the dimensions, box position versus tail and foot strap position relative to box to the slingshot boards - that should give you a good feel. But why not just get a slingshot board to go with it?

One thing that impacts most of the foil boards though is that they dont have much volume forward of mast track (to reduce swing weight when up) this has the downside of making tacking much harder whilst you are wallowing around waiting for a gust in really light winds

only thing i would add . If you go for a slingshot system. get the three mast package . You will use the shortest one for only a couple of weeks but the amount of times it will stop you going round the front its well worth it . this way you will gradually build up to the long mast. then you can always lend them out to your mates which is where mine are now.

Smidge - thanks for sharing your experience with a Slingshot foil. I was considering the 2018 JP for a few reasons: price is right, 135L may be enough volume for me (165lbs), in light winds, and is supposed to be a good all around/maneuverable board (i’m A bump n jump windsurfer, not racing board guy). I’ve not ruled out a 2018 Slingshot board. The 125L Wizard seems too small for my low wind needs, the 150L will do the trick, but may be less maneuverable than the JP...bit still a great option. — i’ll compare the two boards as you noted though, good idea and thanks!

deckchair - thanks for the tip on the variable mast lengths! 🙂

My wife uses a jp135 and a Starboard freeride foil quite successfully in light winds.
She uses the outside footstrap positions and far back to keep the weight over the foil. However she uses a 7.2m to get the board to release, so I’m not sure you’d want to go up to that sail size.
If that helps

Thanks for the info rodbos! If she is needing to use a 7.2 to get the board to release, what wind speed is that in? What’s her approx weight? Thanks again, I really appreciate appreciate the insights.

I think the JP 135 can fly quite early. You have to be careful as it can be a bit too eager to fly with some foils and you have to move the strap positions forward a few holes to tame it. Here is a old video of my JP 135 in light winds -
I had only been foiling about 2 months at that time and I was using a NP alu foil which is not the earliest planning foil by a long way. I'm 94kg.

She’s about 70kg not that I dare to ask. she only uses the jp in lightwind as she jumps onto her Starboard foil 122 once she’s on a 6.2 and below.
7.2m is the largest sail size she wants to use and she found the foil 122 a bit wobbly with this rig, when tacking in and out of the cove where we sail.
We decided to keep my jp135 when I bought a new foil 144 to replace it, so that we could get out together in very light winds of 10mph and below.

sailrepair - wow, thanks for the video! A rare treat to see it in action by a fellow sailors...that helps a ton. Pretty good for your size and that light of wind! What size sail are you on there?! I’m 165 lbs, and would likely be on a 7.5 in those conditions. — and likely a Slingshot 79 wing. — what model / foil size are you on?! Thanks again, really appreciate it! 🤙

rodbos - I’m so glad u didn’t ask her!! (and thank you!) I’ll likely go with max 7.5, maybe 8.0. — so is she using the larger 144 foil then instead? And is it acting more stable than the smaller 122? (Not sure how these compare to a Slingshot 79 wing, (not familiar with the Neil Pryde foils). Been focused on the large Slingshot wings, figuring i’d Need them in the low winds where I (unfortunately) live.
