Paint matching for repairs.

Post by ronnie » Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:23 pm

I had some paint chip off a JP board (it seemed the surface below the chipping had.t been prepared properly - as it was shiny) and bought many attempts at getting matching paint, using paint codes and colour cards. I could get close but not match it ( I think there is also a coat of lacquer over the paint, which tends to deteriorate and doesn't help). It could look very close colourwise indoors from a certain angle.

My final attempt was to go to a custom car paint supplier who could scan the board and mix a matching paint, but they refused to do it because there was lead in their paint and it was illegal to supply paint that was going to be contacting water. (used in contact with the sea for instance).
It does seem strange, as many cars contact lots of running water every time it rains.

Maybe if I had just had a large enough chip of paint to get scanned, I could have got the paint?

Would it be the JP orange by chance? It is a blend of colours and virtually impossible to match.

No - it was the red on the bottom of a SUP Slate.
This is the repair near the rail, to the right of the P.
It is more obvious in daylight.

It affects the value of the board. I have traded the board when buying a new one. It would have been worth more with an invisible repair.

I needed paint for the nose of my RRD Wave Cult so took the board to a local car paint supplier and they matched it using a RAL colour swatch and mixed a can of that colour. It wasn’t a 100% match but good enough not to notice. I've now sold the board but am left with a nearly full can of RRD red.

I see that Fanatic now publish the RAL number of their colours making it possible to order online without a trip to a paint shop with the board.

Ok, so the paint match disguises the repair, to appear, not repaired. Truth in non disclosurer.

I did send them pictures I had taken of the paint flaking off before the repair and a description of the repair - plus - it was visible that it had been repaired. It was only a cosmetic repair as the fibreglass below was undamaged - just seemingly not prepped properly in that spot before painting. Very annoying, as it took quite a bit off the value of the board, and was a manufacturing fault IMO.
