Why gybe underhand?

Post by maker » Tue Sep 24, 2019 5:52 pm

Gurus say when gybing new hand moves under old one. Realise I do over; I tried under a few times today and cannot figure why it is the "instructed way". Any ideas?

I do underhand on starboard tack gybes, overhand on port tack ones. No idea why, both seem to work but as Southsea mentioned underhand does encourage bending your knees and staying low.

Reckon boom height has something to with it. I realised I was going underhand today, at least on the inside. Can't remember the outside gybes, but I didn't make many of them

I’ve always heard it was to keep the mfp on and the mast more upright.

Whippy says everything always underhand. So, last time I made a point of going underhand and realised I did it anyway when fast planing through gybe: going overhand or mast grab is a sign of something going wrong earlier in the gybe so board slows which for me is either due to big sail mostly on apparent wind, or small sail in bad chop. perfect gybes are easier in perfect conditions ;)

Pros slalomsailing seems to favor going under and with an underhand.

Going under is always a good idea as it encourages us to stay low. Under or overhand depends on how you like to come out. All is possible.

In earlier days I often sailed with the fronthand underhand, but now mostly sailing wave and freestyle equipment I never use an underhand.
