My testing, so my opinion, is that RDM do better in higher wind, and SDM the opposite.
David Ezzy has mentioned that the correct mast bend, is the important part, not RDM or SDM.
Several advantageous for each exist , and if the sail is designed for one type, ie the mast sleeve is narrow or the sail has cams or, list goes on.

All mine are RDM , starting in 1998.
One note when you get hit in the head with a RDM, because it’s pointer it hurts more, helmet cures this and it does sink faster.

I am having some of the same thoughts at the moment, my current 3.7m Ezzy fits on a 370 mast with the luff at 364cm.

I am about to invest in a 3.7m Simmer Black Tip where the recommended mast is 340 for the luff at 354cm.

Spending money on a 340 isn't justified, so I will see how I go with the 370 and the sail set as high up the mast as I can get away with, and the extension set at 0.

If the 370 is also Ezzy, a 340 bottom section would take the mast length to 355.

Have just bought a 340 ezzy legacy section for just over £100 to fit an Ezzy 3.7 and the set was spot on. Worth it just for the the outing on Saturday.

Good point. Discussion : do I want a 340 or size——— mast, when I don’t use it much. When I do use it I want it too perform.
Much like dedicated snow tires that drive on dry roads a lot, but when needed.
