What's going on at Hayling?

Post by martinwindsurf » Mon Feb 10, 2020 2:03 pm

The huts and defences have been removed over the last year or so and unsurprisingly today on the webcam I see the car park and golf course are flooded. Did the council do this on purpose to save money on repairing defences or is there some other reason for this insanity? Perhaps hoping it will turn into a big sandy beach full of tourists during the summer?

I was wondering the same. The west part of the car park (the end where deviants gather for their abominable practices) has been blocked off and last week the sea seemed to be making a good start at reclaiming it. I had a look at their 159 page Beach Management Plan. Their 'plan' for West Beach seems to be: "Removal of the remaining structure at West Beach should be investigated and take place when the revetment is no longer serviceable and before there is a health and safety issue with the structure.  The performance of the remaining groynes at West Beach should be investigated and where deemed redundant, should be removed where causing a health and safety risk. Further studies are required to investigate whether these should be removed or repaired." That sounds a bit like just accepting it's going to be washed away and not do anything about that beyond removing the remains of the groynes and such. I wonder if the Inn on the Beach will eventually become an island?

Fascinatingly, it seems they have a programme of deploying thousands of 'smart pebbles' ('tracer pebbles') so they can monitor what pebbles get up to when we're not looking. https://www.escp.org.uk/how-they-work

So the council have milked the cash cow parking meters for years, now it's time to protect their assets and they bail out saying they can't afford it. Great leisure facility for locals and day trippers removed.
The groynes at Climping are beyond economic repair, the beach is getting washed down the coast and is now blocking half the estuary or the Arun. The contractors are in with big machines to remove it. Rather than take it back up the coast it's being sold off as building material. You cant make this stuff up!

Usually it is a mention in the local newspaper for a Darwin award.

Sailed at Hayling today. The beach has washed away right back past where the huts were and is making inroads into the golf course. The shingle is going from behind the wooden boards and the car park will probably have washed away after Denis!

Still the parking machine wasn't working so we didn't have to pay.

Maybe the the beach and car park erosion is God's response to the imposition of winter parking charges? And kitesurfing, probably ;)
